How to collect water

Save water and money spent on metered water. You can easily collect sufficient water in a water butt to keep a collection of acid loving plants perfectly happy right through the summer.

If you are more ambitious, you can not obtain kits that link water butts together, so creating a really effective water storage system for your garden. The butt should be easy to use, so make sure there is room to get a can of water under the tap.

Keep the butt covered at all times so that the water remains sweet and clean. You can also recycle water that has been used for washing or bathing in the house. Known as grey water, it is suitable for applying to established plants in borders and on lawns, but is best used immediately and not stored.

Another way is to use a dribble system, whereby a special hose with small holes in it is laid throughout the border, so that water slowly dribbles out over a long period of time. These pipes can be buried below the mulch, thus reducing wastage through evaporation.

Watering with hoses or sprinklers may be subject to local water authority controls, especially during drought conditions. There may also be regulations regarding connections to the water mains.

Check that you are not infringing any regulations. Mulching will help to preserve the moisture in a border by cutting down the amount of water that evaporates.
