Whether your boyfriend broke up with you abruptly or whether it was a long time in coming, the emotional bonds formed when two people are dating don't just go away the moment the break up is announced.
You ex still has strong emotional connections to you in the days and weeks after a break up. In fact, he probably still loves you as well. The only difference is that now, he's trying to move on without you. In an effort to get past the relationship, your boyfriend chooses to ignore these feelings or push them to the side.
Getting your boyfriend back before those feelings are finally gone is a critical part of reversing your break up. If you wait too long before making a move, you could find that those attachments are no longer as strong as they once were. You need to be proactive about winning him back, if you want to one day date your ex again.
By the same token, you can't move too fast either. Immediately after he dumps you is not the optimum time to reach out to your exboyfriend. By allowing him some time to process the breakup, three vital things happen:
1) Your boyfriend sees what his life will be like without you. This is known as 'creating a void', and it's the first step in the process of getting your ex back.<
2) Your ex has the chance to actually miss you. You can't get him back until he needs you again, so by staying away you're creating lonliness on his part.
3) Your exboyfriend will start worrying that you'll move on without him. This will make him reconsider the breakup much faster than if he knows where you are and what you're doing.
Left alone for too long, your boyfriend's feelings and emotional bonds toward you will slowly diminish. This is why it's crucial to know exactly when to reinitiate contact. There are ways of reconnecting with your ex that can put your back in his life again, and squarely on the path to reconciliation.
